A couple of years ago, David Cameron toyed with the idea of appealing to the Christian Right. It was a potent demographic in the United States, the argument went, so maybe it could work for the Conservatives in Britain, especially as a hardline American Evangelicalism seemed to be migrating to the UK.
In the event, Cameron decided that, socially at least, the liberal middle-ground is safer election-winning territory. Perhaps Boris Johnson’s psephology guru Lynton Crosby warned him that the Christian Right wasn’t all it was cracked up to be anymore. It didn’t fix it for Mitt Romney. More likely it fell into the same category in Cameron’s mind as Ukip: ‘Fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists.’
